University staff across the county have walked out for a second day as part of a nationwide strike over pay.

Deliveries have been turned away at the University of Sussex campus at Falmer this morning, a human chain was set up in the underpass from Falmer Station and a march is taking place in the city centre.

Meanwhile, the student occupation of the university's Bramber House in protest at privatisation has ended as students join the picket line and march.

In a statement, the Bramber House occupiers said: "One of our main aims was to raise awareness of the strike, and we have done this.

"Through discussions with staff, they have supported the occupation but have also affirmed that they wished for us join their numbers at the strike.

Now, we are leaving to stand with our staff in the way that they requested; we will be joining them at the picket lines and urging students and staff not to break the picket."

The occupation started a week ago, with university bosses promising "swift action" to evict them

Unison members working in the Universities of Brighton, Chichester and Sussex are striking over a pay row.

The UK-wide strike is going ahead after employers refused to make an improved offer above its initial 1% pay increase.

Dave Prentis, UNISON general secretary, said: “The employers’ imposed payment of 1% does not address the increasing cost of living for staff who face rising energy costs and increasing food bills, and does little for the 4,000 staff working in universities who earn less than the living wage.

“A fair day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay, and higher education workers deserve a better standard of living in return for their hard work and the contribution they make to the success of UK universities.”
