Plans for a £79 million college redevelopment have been given the go-ahead - but only just.
As it looks to “transform the future of further education in city for next 40 years”, City College Brighton and Hove wants to revamp its Pelham Street campus in Brighton.
Bosses claimed the proposal, which would be centred on a series of high-rise buildings of up to ten-storeys containing teaching rooms, 442 student homes and 125 properties, would create “exceptional learning opportunities” for 10,000 students a year.
But, with the 1.28-hectare site sitting in the heart of North Laine, residents claimed the short and long-term impacts were unacceptable.
After listening to objections, Brighton and Hove City Council’s cross-party planning committee voted through the plan at a meeting in Hove Town Hall this morning.
With six councillors for and six councillors against, the decision came down to the casting vote of planning chairman Phelim MacCafferty.
