Pride organisers hope to take the event to the “international stage” after announcing the theme for next year's celebration.

Brighton Pride Community Interest Company has announced Freedom to Live will be the umbrella theme for the Pride Festival in 2014.

Organisers said next year's event will continue to put the spotlight on the plight of the LGBT community all over the world.

Planning has already begun for what is set to be the biggest Pride ever with its newly extended runtime.

Next year's event will run from Friday August 1 until the Sunday as organisers attempt to top what they described as “a defining” event this year.

Organisers say they were inspired to choose this year's theme following one of this summer's highlights with campaigner Peter Tatchell's impassioned plea from the main stage for world-wide equality following the screening of James Brooks' film From Russia Without Love.

Russian Vodka was banned from this year's event as part of political campaigning about the plight of LGBT people in Russia following the introduction of new anti-gay 'propaganda legislation'. Artwork was inspired by the 76 countries where it is illegal to be LGBT.

Pride director Paul Kemp said: “Our mission for Brighton Pride is to put it on an international stage.

“It is one of the biggest events in the UK and we really want to make Brighton Pride an international Pride and take it on to an international platform and highlighting the plight of LGBT communities all over the world who do not have the same freedoms as we enjoy in the United Kingdom.

“2013 was a defining year for Pride as a celebration of diversity and a return to Pride's campaigning roots.

“In 2014 we want to widen the focus to highlight countries all over the world where LGBT people are denied their Freedom to Live.”

A community feedback meeting is being held on Wednesday at 7pm to plan for the event.

Theme suggestions for the LGBT Community Parade will be discussed at the meeting at Envy in Charles Street in Brighton.

Organisers will learn in February whether they will receive a £25,000 grant from Brighton and Hove City Council to help with the event running costs.

It is also expected the theme for the parade will also be announced around this time.

Mr Kemp said: “We only got landlord's consent about four weeks ago and now we go out into the community to get their feedback.”
