Hole knocked in Churchill Square as revamp begins

The Argus: Churchill Square Churchill Square

A major shopping centre is looking forward to a hole new future – with work on its most significant facelift since the 1990s beginning a week before Christmas.

Tens of thousands of shoppers are expected to descend on Churchill Square Shopping Centre in Brighton as the Christmas rush hots up.

But those visiting are set to be greeted with a large gap in its facade as contractors began work on revamping some of its 50-year-old units, to ensure that it can compete with London and Southampton as a shopping destination.

The proposal, which was revealed by owners Standard Life Investments last year, will see floor to ceiling glass installed along the entire 100-metre Western Road building.

At the heart of the development will be the centre’s new flagship Topshop/Topman store.

It is expected that the work will take months to complete.

I seriously can not believe they are doing this just before Christmas. The shops there will suffer badly. Let's hope some of the businesses there will be compensated due to the stupidity of the Churchill owners.

Surely a flagship Topman/Topshop means another major store is lost from Western Road... therefore degrading the areas shopping facilities? What will the existing Topman become, a Tesco or a Pound Store?

Floor to ceiling glass giving shoppers a magnificent view of the bus stops. It would probab;y be better to re-route all the buses and roof over Western Road making it one big shopping centre.

About 60% (?) of the "new" shopping centre was just the old one, but cladded. A bit like Selhurst Park.

Thats not the old churchill square, that is the current one, looks awful, and why they've put holes in it at their peak time is ridiculous, Thats the barrats unit in the pic, next door to bhs.

He's obviously talking about the black building behind. Anyone can see that the bit at the front is the Current Churchill Square (which is a re-clad section of the old Churchill Square).

You cannot polish a turd..............an
d there is nothing they can do with the existing shops to compete with London and Southampton as a shopping destination. Try the Purley way in Croydon for John Lewes, Ikea, Wing Kip, various mega stores and some great eating and leisure facilities, all with free parking so the cost of the petrol is cheaper than the parking and the time to get there is less than that spent queueing to get into or out of the NCPs in Brighton

I used to shop at the supermarket that was downstairs at the back of the old Churchill Square and I remember a bleak, windy, wet, concrete place.

The new shopping mall is small, but a huge improvement on what it was and we still have the rest of Western Road and North Road for that fresh air vibe!

they need to create a bus turnaround at the clocktower and close western road to traffic to bring a new vibe to the area, little shops up and down the side streets a part covered area along the middle of the road and a fantastic street market once a week the length of western rd.buses could turnaround at the floral clock area west of this.somewhat like they did with worthing years ago .with its wednesday market running through the town.
