A pop star and a volleyball coach were among Sussex’s high achievers who collected royal honours.

Scores of people were at Buckingham Palace yesterday for the Queen’s Birthday Honours List – a ceremony that recognises the achievements and services of people across the UK.

Singing sensation Adele, who lives in Hove, made a rare public appearance to collect a prestigious MBE – Most Excellent Order of the British Empire – for her services to music.

The 25-year-old has sold more than 30 million records worldwide, scooped Oscar, Grammy, Brit and Academy awards and wrote and sang the theme tune for the smash-hit James Bond film Skyfall.

The performer, who wore a dark turquoise patterned dress, did not stop to speak to the waiting press inside the royal residence. She will now be officially known as Adele Adkins MBE after collecting her prize from the Prince of Wales.

Volleyball coach Freda Bussey, from Worthing, also collected an MBE for serv- ices to sport. The former England international founded Ashcombe Volleyball Club (AVC) in 1976 and has served as secretary ever since.

She has coached more than 40 players to international level and founded AVC’s first sitting volleyball team in 2009 – enabling people with disabilities to play the sport.

The team won the Grand Prix League and Cup in 2011 and won the London Sitting League Championship in 2012.

Mrs Bussey, 63, who last year carried the Olympic torch through Southampton, said: “It was fantastic. Prince Charles pre-sented me with my award and Adele was just before me in the queue.

“She was very kind and told me it was the first time she’d worn heels since she had her baby. She was lovely.

“Charles asked me if I coached just women and he was surprised when I told him I coached men and sitting down volleyball too. It’s been a great day.”
