The county is set to be buffeted by 70 mph winds in a stormy countdown to Christmas.

Forecasters are predicting more heavy rain and severe gale force winds tomorrow and Tuesday.

Up to 60mm of rainfall is predicted over the higher ground of the North and South Downs in the next two days with wind gust speeds of up to 70mph gusts along the coast.

West Sussex County Council are warning that gale force winds could lead to disruption to transport and damage to infrastructure with the risk of trees being brought down.

The authority is also asking residents to make sure that any Christmas trees and decorations put up outside are securely tied down to prevent them from being blown away and potentially hurting passers-by.

The Highways Agency is warning motorists driving high-sided vehicles, riding motorcycles or towing caravans  to check traffic and weather conditions before setting out on journeys and to heed any advice such as speed restrictions .
