Gatwick Express suspends services

The Argus: Train delay: services on the Gatwick Express have been suspended for a week Train delay: services on the Gatwick Express have been suspended for a week

Servicers on a major rail link have been halted.

The Gatwick Express service, which links the airport with London Victoria, will be suspended until January 2.

A spokesman said the week-long closure will allow work on the line between Redhill in Surrey and Purley in south London to be carried out.

Southern, First Capital Connect and First Great Western services to the airport are being disrupted.

Southern said from December 27 until January 1 trains between Purley and Redhill would not run.

Travellers have been advised to use Southern trains between East Croydon and East Grinstead and the buses between East Grinstead and Gatwick Airport.

First Capital Connect passengers are asked to use Southern services between Sutton and Gatwick Airport, and on services between London Bridge and Coulsden Town, with a connecting bus service to the airport and Three Bridges.

This isn't news. It has been announced and posted at stations for months. Pay attention there at the back...

It may be just me but that report is terribly confusing - if trains aren't running between Redhill and Purley does that mean all the lines are closed or just certain tracks? And how does this affect travellers from Brighton to the capital?!

It's all lines basically Croydon to Three Bridges, has been planned for years, reported on for months and posted at stations for ages. It affects Southern, FCC and GX, but for some reason they have only mentioned GX in this report.

"First Capital Connect passengers are asked to use Southern services between Sutton and Gatwick Airport," i think the Argus need to re-write this story as the information is incorrect FCC don't run a service between Sutton and Gatwick. FCC web site advises " Customers traveling between the South Coast/Gatwick Airport and East Croydon should use Southern train services between East Croydon and East Grinstead. A frequent rail replacement bus service will operate between East Grinstead and Gatwick Airport/Three Bridges. Your First Capital Connect tickets will be valid on these bus services, but you should allow an extra 70 to 90 minutes for your journey. Customers not travelling to/from Gatwick Airport should travel via Three Bridges. " So the Argus have this wrong.

Yeah. I still have to work so with all the uncertainty of the planned works combined with the unplanned disruption caused by the weather (and bitter experience has taught me it doesn't take much to bring the network to a grinding halt) I've actually bought a car, so I'm now one of those 'lazy and selfish' motorists that the Great and the Good like to blame for all the problems of modern society.
