Cruel yobs are believed to have swung a cat round by its tail – leaving vets with no choice but to amputate.

Two-year-old Thomas was so badly injured after the horrific attack that he faced being put down.

But thanks to the heroics of his vets and quick thinking owners, he is now set to make a full recovery – minus the tail.

Owner Jason Wimbleton, 41, let a frightened looking Thomas into his flat in Norfolk Road, Littlehampton.

Instead of being his usual friendly self, he scurried into the corner of the room and sat in silence.

Mr Wimbleton said: “After a while we knew something was wrong. I presumed he must have been hit by a car so we rushed him to the emergency vets.”

X-rays showed Thomas’s tail had become detached from his body leaving him in horrific pain and unable to go to the toilet.

It looked as if he would have to be put down but vets opted to amputate.

He camethrough the risky procedure and miraculously began to recover.

Mr Wimbleton said: “He’s doing OK but he is a completely different cat.

“He used to let anybody and everybody stroke him.

He was a friendly and bubbly cat. But now he gets nervous around anyone he doesn’t know.”

He added: “The vet said he was either swung around by his tail or had it yanked.

“Whoever did it must be sick in the head. I wouldn’t like to say what I would do if I got my hands on them.”

The incident comes just weeks after another cat called Toby was shot in the face with an air rifle.

The owners, who live just minutes away from Mr Wimbleton in Littlehampton, rushed their two-year-old to the vets where he underwent a three-hour operation.

Mr Wimbleton added: “There seems to be a lot of animal cruelty in the area at the moment.

“There are also reports of cats being poisoned. I think the best thing is to keep people aware of what’s going on and make sure they are keeping an eye out for anything suspicious.”
