Hove church's stained-glass windows smashed as thieves steal collection box on Christmas Day

The Argus: Hove church's stained-glass windows smashed as thieves steal collection box on Christmas Day Hove church's stained-glass windows smashed as thieves steal collection box on Christmas Day

Thieves broke into a church on Christmas Day, smashed thousands of pounds worth of stained glass windows and stole a collection box containing hundreds of pounds.

The offenders targeted All Saints Church on the corner of Eaton Road and The Drive, Hove, just hours after midnight mass on Wednesday.

They smashed numerous pieces of Victorian stained glass windows, a set of glass doors and stole a collection box containing around £500.

The church had just started an appeal among its congregation to try and raise around £45,000 to get the windows and the stone mullions they sat on repaired.

But now All Saints warden Michael Anderson fears the church will instead have to fork out around £10,000 in repair bills.

Father Phil Ritchie, the vicar at All Saints, said he was feeling “low and disappointed”.He said: “We didn't have a service until 10am on Christmas morning but I arrived at about 8am. I went inside and saw a massive pile of glass where we'd just had new beautiful doors installed.

“I stepped over it and saw beautiful stained glass windows ripped out and thrown to the ground.

“It was the saddest thing.

“I was worried that someone was still in the church as I was in there by myself, but soon realised the donations box had gone too.“The church is a Grade I listed building and we're trying to raise money to get the windows repaired. But now instead of raising money we've got a big repair bill and stolen collection from midnight mass.

“It's a bit sick really.”

Father Ritchie said he locked the church up at around 12.40am following midnight mass and the culprits smashed their way in between then and 8am.

He added: “It's been such a great Christmas. The church was packed for midnight mass, we've had lots of events and have engaged with the community. I'm low and disappointed that it has happened when we're trying to make it a building that serves Hove well.”

A spokesman from Sussex Police said: “On Christmas morning we received a report that sometime between 1am and 8am a thief or thieves had broken in to All Saints Church in Eaton Road, Hove, by smashing a side window, smashed open an inside door, broke open the charity box and took the cash inside. No arrests have been made. Anyone who was in the area in the early hours of

The money could have been banked after mass in containers banks provide for the purpose. Was someone at the midnight mass and observing that nobody left with the collection? Or has careless insider talk led to this happening?

This us a terrible blow to Hove heritage and the vicar's comments nake me wonder if the are insured......or NOT!

The church is insured - at a huge cost because it is constantly targeted by vandals and thieves. The money stolen was not the midnight mass collection which was stored in a safe. It was a separate appeal contained in a box which was thought to be secure.
Nice to see such sympathy for the victims of a despicable crime on Christmas morning.

Good posting.
Makes me sick that they scrounge money in collections from the poor to repair their buildings when they are probably the biggest and richest landowner in the country.

Because they've been raised in the new lefty morality, that places the responsibility on the individual to protect themselves at all times, rather than the individual to behave decently towards other folk. It's the result of continually downgrading punishment in favout of encouragement through reward. Instead of people behaving 'because it's the right thing to do' it's now a question of there's nothing in it for me and an enhanced sense of entitlement. You simply can't police a society into good behaviour, it has to come from within each individual and we've seriously lost our way. whether it be petty criminals, bankers or politicians.

I do believe that a nerve has been hit with you and suspect that the comments you have written are exactly those you (or people who know you) might use to describe yourself, although instead you are lashing out at those who can see through your past (and maybe your present and future).

I suspect you will make the news some time soon once the bigger fish have all been landed when details of your sordid past will be available for all to see.

Lets hope matters are fully resolved without anymore wrong doing.

Oh and belated compliments of the season to you and all those affected by you.

Stealing from a church is just plain wrong.
How odd

The church as we know does not have a great reputation and maybe needs to resolve its historic, current and potential future issues before complaining about other minor issues.
It is funny but you sound just like somethingsarejustwro

Good morning Cyril

I do believe that a nerve has been hit with you and suspect that the comments you have written are exactly those you (or people who know you) might use to describe yourself, although instead you are lashing out at those who can see through your past (and maybe your present and future).

I suspect you will make the news some time soon once the bigger fish have all been landed when details of your sordid past will be available for all to see.

Lets hope matters are fully resolved without anymore wrong doing.

Oh and belated compliments of the season to you and all those affected by you.
Happy New Year Cyril

Here's to a year when hopefully the so called 'officers of the church' do not abuse children and vulnerable people and instead make pro active restitution for damage they have caused in the past.

Should you feel the need to assist in the latter - for reasons known to you - then I am confident the world will become a better place.

Happy New Year Cyril
