Flood alerts are still in place along much of the Sussex coast and several rivers.

There were fears of serious flooding yesterday (Friday) as high winds and rain combined with tidal surges.

But Sussex's sea defences held firm in the face of the rising waters.

But the Environment Agency still has several flood alerts in place including Shoreham Harbour, Seaford coastal areas and Littlehampton Ropewalk.

There are also alert for the Upper and Lower Ouse, the Cuckmere and the Lower Arun rivers.

Forecasters have predicted heavy rain for today (January 4) and tomorrow and have warned of possible localised flooding as the ground is already saturated from the downpours of the previous week.

It comes as Littlehampton coastguard has warned people not to go near the seafront during the storms.

A spokesman said: "The weather lately has been very wet, combined with extremely high tides, and powerful waves, this has left cliffs very unstable.

The message is simple, do not walk along cliff edges, do not walk under cliffs, and do not ignore 'path closed' signs, that may be in place along some coastal cliff routes, be it above or below the cliff.

"If you see a coastal or cliff emergency, ring 999 and ask for the coastguard."
