Brighton residents vow to boycott scruffy Ditchling Road BP

The Argus: The Ditchling Road BP garage The Ditchling Road BP garage

Householders have vowed to boycott a petrol station after its owners “snubbed” requests to clean up their act.

Despite pleas from locals, the owners of the BP garage in Ditchling Road, Brighton, have refused to smarten up the dilapidated exterior of the garage shop, claiming they cannot afford it.

Andrew Haig, 68, of the Round Hill Society, wrote to MRH Retail, which owns the site, to suggest this work be carried out while the forecourt was being renovated in the summer.

However, the reply from Paul Williams, of MRH, said it was “an overhead that we cannot afford with no return presentable”.

Mr Haig said: “I think their response is a disgrace.

“Basically they are saying that they have no obligation to the local environment unless there is an immediate financial return.

“I for one will be buying my petrol elsewhere. I wouldn’t blame others for doing the same.”

Ward councillor Pete West said: “Residents in Ditchling Road work very hard to maintain the appearance of their own properties.

“This building however is a real mess and letting the side down badly. The service station and shop serve the local area, so I can’t understand the attitude of the owners toward their neighbours and customers.”

Of course petrol stations are usually so pretty aren't they!?

Ridiculous effort by what I imagine is a very small group of toffy-nosed residents with nothing better to do.

What about the dirty great white tower blocks that overlook that area of Ditchling Road? Or the stink of rotting rubbish from the waste depot?

Didn't there used to be an abattoir around there. I lived around there for a short while and I don't remember it being a particularly attractive neighbourhood. No better and no worse than anywhere else.

Seem to me that the area has got more than its far share of Brighton pretensionistas.

Anyway, these garages make bugger all on petrol. The make it on the fags, milk etc

So the Guardianista are going to stop going there? That means less chance of waiting for ages in the queue behind some embittered un-milf as she buys an overpriced packet of Kleenex, a bag of chocolate buttons and a 10-pack of whatever ciggies she's promised her mother/ partner/therapist she's given up.
Well that'll make my thrice-weekly trip to buy Marmite, dusters and cat food slightly quicker: when can they start?

Thanks to Pete West and his mates, Ditchling road is now a super highway since vehicles are using the route as an alternative to the Lewes Road so the garage has probably increased it's business. It's also a Collect site for parcels.
You can't really think that Mr West cares about the local environment.

Good old make it up Maxwell. Well, if the garage is doing so well, perhaps they can spend some of their largess on tidying the place up a bit.

I don't think anyone would expect the garage to transform into a grade listed building, but it is a shame so many on here have such a low level of pride in their city that they don't want a business to tart up its shabby premises a little.

I had already left the Labour Party before moving to B&H and they did do some good things initially like improve the seafront, build Jubilee Library etc. but there was a lot of talk and not that much action given the time in power and the money available. They stopped being a party promoting the interests of a majority, treat their members with contempt, didn't perform and I moved on. We can't afford another wasteful Labour administration, a party that runs to the hills at the first sign of a bad headline. Councils have had to deliver more for less and B&H has been better at this than any other council I can think of.

Yes it is a garage, but it does not have to be an eyesore just as student housing that you like to complain about, does not have to be a tip.

I live just round the corner, I've filled up the car here on many occasions - and whilst the petrol station isn't pretty, I'm yet to come across one that is.

Personally, as the petrol station have stated they cannot afford this added cost, would it not have been a better response for the 'caring' residents to pull some money together to help? After all, the end game for them should be a more presentable petrol station, not falling out with the owners...?

Just a suggestion.

The Labour party must be so relieved they got shot of you. The comments you write on here certainly don't do the Green Party any favours. You do a great job of turning people against the Greens with your supercilious attitude. If I were a Green Party supporter, I would be begging you to leave.

You say Labour treated people with contempt and promoted the interests of a majority. So now you are promoting a party that treats people with contempt and promotes the interests of a minority. Where will you defect to next?

The garage may look shabby in some people's view, but nowhere near as shabby as rubbish piled up for weeks due to an incompetent "green" council. I notice you have swerved that story completely.
