Thousands sign petition to save Brighton Speed Trials

Thousands of people have signed a petition to save the world’s longest-running motorsports event.

The first Brighton Speed Trials took place in Madeira Drive, Brighton, in 1905.

But organisers say they fear for its future as Brighton and Hove City Council has not yet approved an application to host the event in 2014.

Admitting concerns about the safety of the event following the death of a competitor in 2012, leading councillors said they had to weigh up all the options before making a decision.

More than 8,500 people have signed a petition on the council’s website calling for the event to be saved.

A decision will be made by the council’s Economic Development and Culture Committee at a meeting on January 23.

For more details visit www.brighton-hove.gov.uk and search for e-petitions.

The speed trials should be allowed to go ahead. In my view competitors take part at their own risk.

This is clearly a popular event and, if the event organisers can demonstrate it is as reasonably safe as the event can be then it should be reinstated. The recent publicity may have breathed a bit of new life to the speed trials.

The whole of Madiera Drive needs a rethink and the catalyst could be the condition of the arches as in today's paper. There is need for a sensible strategy including the arches, Volks, access and events etc. A good start would be to improve the paving and introduction of a high quality cycle path along Marine Parade, plenty of space and it would provide a diversion route when Madiera Drive shuts as well as a valuable asset for KempeTowners.

Well I'm sure that the organisers, competitors, veterans and fans of this 108 year old event, believed to be the world's oldest running (for now) motor race, and a tradition that Brighton can be rightly proud of, will be absolutely thrilled to have the blessing of the above two posters.

The arrogance is simply staggering.

The greens don't like anything to do with cars perhaps they are bothered about the lost parking charges in the area?

A diversion for when madeira drive closes? What are you even on about you fool? If the road is closed use the A259? You spout utter nonsense! How can a bike lane be an asset for any resident? what a bizarre word to use

The catalyst will be the arches, this is true, this will be used as the reason the greens will not give the go ahead for the speed trials.

Volks, Again, the greens do not see a future for this if lottery funding is not granted.

In simple terms, your pathetic excuse of a council do not see any importance in brightons history, They forget a council is voted in to serve its people, not destroy their town and force their idealistic views upon the residents. This term will be used as a spectacle to ensure the greens never get voted in anywhere ever again.

And once they are gone, can we please have your word that you will stop posting drivel and nonsense and spin?

Now the numberplate has gone....the Speed Trials are going.....

What next?

They will be proposing to turn the Paviion into a resort hotel.

Heritage is important to those of us born here, surely isn't the ethos of green thinking to preserve what we have for future generations?
