The 54-year-old managed to sleep through the incident but his neighbour described it sounding like a plane landing.

Mr Arnell said: “I was sleeping and the next thing I know my neighbour is tapping on my window and told me my roof had been blown off.

“It was lucky it happened at night when no-one was around. It destroyed my neighbours shed.”

Once again Worthing Pier was closed due to the high winds causing safety fears, as it has been regularly in the past week.

Shoreham Coastguard warned people not to stray near the seafront in these dangerous conditions after spotting two women near the water’s edge.
