Brighton city cat loses leg 'in animal trap'

The Argus: Rupert after his ordeal Rupert after his ordeal

A cat lost a leg and tail after he is believed to have accidentally roamed into an animal trap.

Jeremy Norton, 38, fears his beloved Rupert was caught in the trap after going for a Saturday afternoon stroll near his home in Montpelier Road, Brighton.

He had to have the already-severed limb and tail completely removed at Coastway Vets in Freshfield Road, Brighton following the ordeal on December 28.

Mr Norton, 38, who works in digital advertising, said: “Rupert dragged himself home and he did not seem right.

“I wondered what was wrong and then realised that he was missing most of his foot and tail.

“I took him to the vets straight away and he was in a state of shock.

"The vet explained the only thing that could have done this would have been an animal trap. The wounds were completely clean cuts. There was almost no bleeding.”

Mr Norton said he informed the police and the RSPCA.

He continued: “What makes it interesting is that I live on the bottom end of Montpelier Road and Rupert only ever travels as far as the end of the block and back - who on earth would have such a trap in this vicinity in the centre of the city.

“There are lots of cats in this immediate area and awareness about Rupert's injuries might provide sufficient warning to other locals and their pets who don't want to go through a similar trauma that Rupert and I experienced over the New Year period.”

A Coastway Vets spokeswoman confirmed they treated Rupert, but could not confirm how Rupert suffered the injuries.

The RSPCA said there were different types of traps in the UK including spring traps and cage traps.

A spokesman said: “The use of spring traps to kill animals is controlled mainly by two pieces of legislation.

“With certain exceptions, all spring traps must be tested and approved and they must only be used for the target species for that particular trap and be set in a natural or artificial tunnel.

“Broadly speaking the Wildlife and Countryside Act works on the premise that mammals are unprotected except for certain species, whereas all birds have protection unless they are listed as exceptions.

“Cage traps are also used to capture various mammals such as feral cats, mink and grey squirrels.

“Once an animal has been caught, it could be protected under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and an offence committed if unnecessary suffering is caused, for example it is left to suffer in the trap or not humanely despatched.”

Absolutely appalling.

I suspect the police would find this too trivial a matter to get involved with, inspite of the horrendous suffering caused here. One can only be thankful that it wasn't a decapitated kitty.

Perhaps the owner can get in touch with RSPCA inspectors who might be able to visit some of the properties surrounding to investigate and ensure this never happens again.

The majority of traps are illegal but some unscrupulous barbaric people still use them. The worst offenders are some gamekeepers and farmers. A few years ago I found the skeletal remains of a badger with a snare still partially attached. One cannot even bare to imagine the appalling suffering this poor animal went through as this wicked snare cut into it's flesh to the bone before it died a painful death. All snares and traps should be totally banned. Of course police and RSPCA were called and did investigate and follow up this enquiry.
People using any method of deterrant or chemical need to be aware that
it will cause immense pain and suffering to other animals including domestic pets as well. If people see snares or traps it is always essential they report and photograph them as many are likely to illegal.

Absolutely disgusting story. Why on earth would anyone set a trap anywhere never mind in the middle of a Town? Sadly even if caught the penalty would not fit this barbaric crime.Cats are resilient creatures and I hope Rupert can get over this terrible ordeal and to the filth that placed said trap, I hope you get what's coming to you.

The person who left this trap must be found - next time it could be a child.

The whole area must be searched very carefully in case there are any more left around.

How any person could do this in the centre of Brighton is unbelievable and I hope they rot in hell.

Lostcats Brighton are spot on. What the hell is happening to the human race.
I despair at the indifference some people show towards innocent animals. It was never this bad before! I point the finger at many landlords and letting agencies refusing many tenants a pet and forcing heartbroken tenants to part with their much loved pets. This is causing a tsunami of abandoned pets with hard pressed charities such as LostCats Brighton having to take them in. I also point the finger at farmers and gamekeepers and idiots with pellet guns.
I blame vets for charging extortion fees and pet insurance companies hiking their prices out of reach of many including my pet hate breeders and idiots that buy from them when there are so many animals desperately waiting for good homes in animal rehoming shelters and of course people who don't get the concept that pets are for life not for Christmas or mere whims that can be disposed of. Animal charities and animals in general are being crushed by man's selfishness, indifference and downright cruelty and it has to change and fast! Please support LostCats Brighton and other animal rehoming shelters. If everyone gave a few pounds and offered a home to these unfortunate abandoned pets and shunned breeders things will eventually start to change but we have a long way to go.

Juleyanne thank you so much for your heartfelt comment s you are completely right in everything you have expressed. Lostcatsbrighton and many other animal rescue shelters are constantly up against it from all corners in Brighton and Hove City. We need more to educate and raise awareness of the main problems, we need to prove to people that having a pet is a responsibility like a child Not just an object to satisfy a whim as you said.

I believe the law of the land should be changed to inforce all animals to be Micro- Chipped and more awareness should be focused on neutering.
These very important actions should also conducted free of charge by vets and not looked upon as a blank cheque to exploit especially to animal shelters

He is our baby basically and now he is missing for 18 days... I dont know if he is lost, someone took him or he is stuck somewhere...! :'(

I hope nothing had happened to him... I dont know what to do and reading this! My God, there is so many bad people... how can someone leave a trap and why??? This is horrible!!!!!
