Hundreds of motorists are set to have their speeding fines rescinded after traffic bosses admitted they had blundered.
The Sussex Safer Roads Partnership are contacting about 1500 motorists to rescind their speeding notices following the discovery of an error.
Motorists issued with fines travelling through roadworks on the Westbourne section of the A27 near Emsworth during the summer are set for a reprieve.
Traffic bosses said that the 50mph speed limit signs were not located correctly according to the traffic order that granted them permission.
The error means that even motorists caught driving at more than the normal 70mph speed limit for this section of road are set to get away with it.
Phil Henty, operations manager for the partnership, said: “In Sussex, we operate our speed camera enforcement within a set of fixed criteria, guaranteeing fair and ethical coverage of the county’s roads in accordance with national and local speed limit guidance.
“Although our mobile safety camera team operated in good faith and accordance with instruction, the discovery of an error in the physical placement of the speed limit signage means that we will not be prosecuting any of the approximately 1500 motorists detected going through the roadworks at over 50mph.”
