Union boss claims council leader stonewalled him during Brighton and Hove budget talks

The Argus: Mark Turner Mark Turner

A union representative has slammed a council leader after he “refused to listen” during a discussion on how to save more than £20 million.

Mark Turner, of the GMB, was one of three union representatives invited to talk to Brighton and Hove City Council at an open meeting about its forthcoming budget.

But after claiming he kept being cut off by council leader Jason Kitcat, Mr Turner refused to speak for the remaining of the discussion in Hove Town Hall on Tuesday.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Turner said: “Coun Kitcat kept on trying to push things along and ask us how the council was going to find the money.

“If I knew that then I would be running the council. As far as I was concerned there was no time limit for the meeting.

“There are some very important issues for our members and the wider public within the proposals which I think have not been looked at.”

In response, Coun Kitcat said Mr Turner had agreed to meet finance spokesmen from each party to discuss his areas of concern in more detail.

A final decision on the budget will take place in February at a meeting of all 54 councillors.

The arrogance of Jason ... Well, no ... not just Jason, I've seen other Green councillors behave like obnoxious brats, pulling faces and just coming short of putting their fingers in their ears while chanting blah blah when opposition councillors spoke in meetings.

And of course the Kitkat and co., have never been economical with the truth or split the infinitive. All I can go on is personal experience.

Don't get me wrong, they all have an agenda, Mark Turner no less then Jason Kitkat. Mark and the Kitkat have history, not least of which is the refuse collection here in Brighton & Hove ... which is still an ongoing concern to many residents.

This isn't a surprise. They don't listen to public consultation or their own officers reports and they even re interpret public consultation to fit their own agenda and issue misleading press releases to the media. I have never come across a party so intransigent, so arrogant and insistent upon ignoring obvious public groundswell of opinion. The last time was during Thatchers poll tax period which cost her her job.
Twice now press releases have been withdrawn after complaints about accuracy.
Failing to listen has cost many parties and individuals an election.

This would all be hilarious.........

.........only WE the Council Tax paying residents are paying through the nose fot it AND, at the same time, not getting the services that we are contarctually entitled to.

A bunch of spoilt children the lot of them - there HAS to be a better way of running a local authority that this pethitic party political / union system we now have.

No private business could ever function like this, the books have to be balanced and the customers (that's we tax-paying residents) have to be served and satisfied - otherwise that business ceases to exist.

Jason may well have the required stuffing in his scrotum, as does no doubt Mark ... with no evidence to the contrary there is little I would like to say on the issue. However one inescapable fact is that whilst Mark only needs to satisfy ... oops unfortunate choice of words given the preceding sentence ... Mark only needs to answer to his union members, Jason and co., have the city wide electorate to answer to.

Politicians rarely 'get up there and do what he thinks is right' they get up there and dictate to the rest of us because they are arrogant in their belief that they know better than we do what is good for us.
