A man has been charged with knifepoint street robberies in Brighton and South London.

Jamie Halifax, 25, of Lewes Road, Brighton is due to appear in custody at Brighton Magistrates' Court today charged with two robberies in Brighton, on January 5 and 8 and with a robbery in Sutton on September 21 last year.

He is also charged with an attempted robbery in Brighton on January 9, and with possession of an offensive weapon, a knife, during all four incidents.

The first Brighton incident happened when a 19-year-old who woman was walking in St Martin's Place, off Lewes Road, at 4.15am on Sunday was approached by a man from behind who demanded she hand over her purse.

When she said she had none he said he would walk her to a cashpoint but he fled with only her cashcard after seeing a group of people nearby.

The second Brighton incident happened at 10.20pm on Wednesday when a man threatened a 22-year-old woman in Windmill Street and ran off with her handbag.

In the third Brighton incident at 1.45am on Thursday a 25-year-old woman was approached by a man in Lincoln Street at the junction with Islingword Road who threatened her and demanded that she hand over her handbag.

The woman screamed and the man ran off empty handed.

In the Sutton incident a man was robbed at knifepoint of bank cards, cash and a mobile phone.
