A former Blackburn Rovers footballer will stand trial accused of making a homophobic gesture at a match while playing against one of his previous clubs.

Colin Kazim-Richards, 27, allegedly made a gesture to the crowd during Blackburn's Championship match against Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on February 12 last year.

Kazim-Richards, who now plays for Turkish club Bursaspor, is charged with one count of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour, within the sight or hearing of a person, likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

The London-born footballer's three-day trial is expected to start at Brighton Magistrates' Court today.
