Brighton and Hove councillors refuse equality training in wake of golliwog row

The Argus: Tony Janio Tony Janio

Councillors are refusing to attend “equality training” sessions, claiming they are a “dreadful waste of money”.

After controversial Conservative councillor Dawn Barnett was ticked off for claiming golliwogs were “not racist”, all 54 members on Brighton and Hove City Council were advised to attend special workshops.

But after the first sessions were cancelled as not enough members said they could make it, The Argus knows of at least eight councillors who have no intention of attending them.

It comes months after the local authority was criticised by consultants for a series of racism, bullying and discrimination allegations.

Tony Janio, Conservative councillor for Hangleton and Knoll, said: “It’s all nonsense.

“We’re all mindful about equalities but the patronising way they have crudely dictated we should all attend these sessions is just wrong.

“It’s a dreadful waste of money.”

In December, councillors received an email inviting them to attend sessions with the offer of three dates.

But sources claim they were cancelled after only a handful said they would be willing to attend.

After the cancellation, The Argus asked the group leaders of all three parties to comment.

Labour group leader Warren Morgan, who was the only one to respond, said: “Equalities training is important.

“All Labour councillors were asked to attend the recent sessions but a number were unable to attend for work or personal reasons.

“All newly elected Labour councillors next May will be required to undertake training as part of their induction.”

But Bob Carden, who represents North Portslade for Labour but will stand down at the next election, said: “If I do not know how to behave after 22 years as a councillor I might as well pack up now.”

Lynda Hyde, Conservative councillor for Rottingdean, said: “I consider it a definite waste of council resources at this time when resources are sparse.

“I suspect this has come about to pacify the people who originally complained about Coun Barnett.”

A council spokeswoman said: “Due regard for equalities principles form the foundation of the council’s work. Providing training on these issues ensures councillors have a sound understanding of the council’s duties under equalities legislation.”

Why was Dawn Barnett reprimanded for her behaviour yet Ben Duncan not, despite Tweeting that a Christian faith school was a cult.
Are some people more equal than others in this council?
Does this council allow religious prejudice?
And why were residents in Elm Grove fined for parking on the pavement yet the hippies parked along Freshfield Road with gas canisters and washing up bowls all over the pavement not dealt with?
Can we attend the training so we can find out why the council doesn't seem to have an equalities policy.

Religions are cults, check the dictionary. Elm Grove double yellow lines are finally enforced, are you saying they shouldn't be? I can't say I have noticed illegal parking in Freshfield Rd. I am sure parking wardens would happily ticket if it were the case.

Come in Maxwell you can do better than this.

The Head of Equalities - Ben Duncan - use of the term "cult" was offensive as is your post. The word "negro" is in the dictionary and was used by Martin Luther King but it is now considered offensive. I am a Christian and I expect to be offended by the Greens as I know some, such as Ben Duncan, are anti religious bigots. However I don't support any action being taken against Duncan or anyone else because I believe in freedom of speech unlike sanctimonious, hypocritical Greens.

A cult is an "organization with deviant and novel beliefs and practices". A bit like the Green Party. It explains why you cannot see the hippies parked in Freshfield Road.

A golliwog may be a cuddly toy, but the second half of the word has been used to cause offence and hatred for a good few years now and is rarely heard on TV since Alf Garnett. Similarly, other terms of racial abuse have disappeared from the media. Just because a word is in the dictionary doesn't mean you have to use it.

Having a skipping rope or washing line in the house doesn't mean that I am contemplating a lynching ...

The whole thing got twisted and skewed and taken to the extremes and now the reality of taking things to extremes is coming around and biting these councillors who are considering a Council Tax rise of over 4% in the budget!

I feel the term 'equalities' has come to mean LGBT, black, Asian, African, middle Eastern maybe, being muslim maybe and not much more in the minds of council officers. Maybe a bit of disability edges into the margins of their thinking.

To do equalities in a proper way the whole lot of them and the councillors would have to take a degree in social anthropology frankly. In practice, 'equalities' is now a genre term encompassing PC right-on hobby horse matters and it looks like bullying to me. Bigoted bullying.

I want all those people who are clammering for cllrs to have equality training to have equality training in how to respect this country's traditions and language and how to avoid using other customs and traditions to compete with them for supremacy.

They should just do their jobs and stop squandering tax payers money. I would like every one of those who went after Cllr Barnett over golliwog toys to be sacked. They have wasted scarce resources which is unforgiveable. They have no sense of responsibility to the greater whole which is unforgiveable. They have a power complex it seems to me which is not what they are hired to have and that is unforgiveable. And they have no sense of giving cultures and races per se equal respect and validity which is unforgiveable. They have created an us and them atmosphere of discomfort and that is unforgiveable. Sack them and be done with it. That should cut the need for at least some of the council tax rise.

The reason that Elm Grove was targetted for pavement parking is to force the vehicles onto side roads thereby causing more parking problems for residents which will allow our heroic, fairminded Council to implement a Residents parking system as the residents, agaisnt the Council wishes, rejected one last year. HJarrs must be either blind, blind drunk or ignorant of the law. On Freshfield Road, opposite the Racecourse there are, on average, 4 or 5 unhitched caravans parked there for months on end, It is an offence to leave a caravan on the highway unless it is hitched to a vehicle capable of towing it.

Diversity Training is merely an extremely expensive conversion course in PC speak. Highly lucrative for all those 'Equality Consultants' and that is just about it.

Equality exists in law. Any other equality is nothing but bunkum. Mutual respect is all we require and you won't get that by forcing people to guilt trip for a couple of hours with a refresher course every other year or so. Nor will committing a cash strapped local authority to extremely expensive token training do anything towards encouraging a cohesive community.

Diversity training for crying out loud. We are cutting essential services left right and center but we should spend money on 'Newspeak'?

Come on Valerie; you are normally more sensible than this.

HJarrs the hours you devote on here worshipping Jason Kitkat and the Green Party is your religion, your love. Some men have religion, some sport, some politics, it's all about devotion and worship but these systems all have very similar boundaries and hierarchical systems. Politics and the need to promote it to the public is your belief system and as I said earlier you clearly enjoy the hierarchy, the manifesto, the rules, belonging, loving, following.
It's worship.
Prior to that it was the Labour Party so maybe your god let you down, but you have a new one to fill your heart and fix you. If that doesn't work maybe you could try religion or make a new one. Clearly you have a need to belong to an organised group with boundaries and beliefs. Some men need to belong to a group and follow a leader, others are leaders. Perhaps you ridicule religion because you know deep down you have the same need as someone who follows and needs or enjoys a religion. It's a crutch or just a nice belief system which keeps you happy.
However, bigotry and intolerance has no place in this town.

Equality and diversity training is as effective in 'curing' bigotry and intolerance as is conversion therapy to 'correcting' homosexuality.

I was given a lovely golliwog doll for a gift. In fact, there are dolls for sale at Vhurchill Square! Does that make me a racist. This is all a bit ridiculous and a waste of money. I'm surprised the over-politically correct aren't protesting outside the shops doors!

I like that way of expressing it - of course it is what the vast majority of ordinary, right minded people do - we adapt with the times.

I'm old enough to remember Alf Garnett, funny at the time - but definitely NOT so now. Times change and we change and adapt with them it is part of evolution if you like, only in our current day and age it happens far faster than it did 50 years ago.

As for equality training - I go with those who say prejudice cannot be trained out, councillors on the other hand can be voted out!

As one of the people potentially delivering equality training I have to point out its not about making them speak differently - its about challenging attitudes and raising awareness of how diverse our city is - and getting to think about what they can do to ensure everyone is represented. For example, if they considered disabled people before adapting buildings or changing critical services, they may realise that they will end up spending more further down the line when they have to redo everything because they got it wrong. If they understood the barriers faced by people of different backgrounds, they could actually improve the health & wellbeing of the entire city,
