A "model” school is celebrating after receiving top marks once again. Hangleton Infant School in Dale View, Hove, was rated as outstanding across the board by inspectors, who found it to be “exceptionally caring”.

Parents described the school as “amazing” and “nurturing” when Ofsted carried out its inspection on December 5 and 6.

In summing up, Government inspectors said all pupils, regardless of their background, age or ability, flourish at the school.

Lizzie Mullarky, the school’s headteacher, said: “We’re committed to making sure every single one of our pupils is given the chance to fulfil their potential.

“Everyone here is thrilled that Ofsted has noted the excellent progress made by all our pupils, including disabled children, those with special education needs and those entitled to free school meals.”

Inspectors gave the school the best possible rating for leadership and management, behaviour and safety of pupils, achievement of pupils and quality of teaching.

Quality of teaching has improved from good in 2007 to outstanding.

Lead inspector Rob Crompton said in the report, which was published on January 9: “Teaching is typically outstanding and support staff are highly effective.

“Reception pupils settle quickly and make excellent progress, which is continued through Years 1 and 2.”

He also noted that pupils at the school behave exceptionally well and that classrooms are welcoming and very well resourced.

Mr Crompton added: “At almost every turn, specialist teachers, support staff, student teachers and volunteer parents can be seen helping individuals and small groups.”

He also praised the “relentless drive” of the executive headteacher Emma Lake, who divides her time between Hangleton Infant School and Benfield Primary School.

The inspectors saw teaching in every class, observing 26 lessons, while the views of parents, carers and staff were taken into account, in the form of 76 questionnaires.

The report found governors are very well informed and passionate about ensuring that pupils’ achievement is outstanding.

Councillor Sue Shanks, chairman of Brighton and Hove City Council’s children and young people committee, said: “We use Hangleton Infants as a model of best practice.

“It really is an excellent school and we’re grateful to all the staff there who help support improvement in other schools within the city.”
