Historians could dig up public land in the search of World War One artefacts.

Sussex Archaeological Society (SAS) has approached Seaford Town Council about excavating land in the area.

Potential sites include Chyngton Farm, where rubbish from a nearby camp was discarded, and Seaford Head, which was home to huts and practice trenches.

Other areas include Cuckmere Haven, which was used as a firing range, and Dymock Farm, which was used as a gas chamber for training.

According to a report to town councillors, which was du to be discussed yesterday: “The work would engage with the public, especially schools, to raise awareness of the town's involvement in the Great War.

“Much of this heritage remains unknown to the local community and, with further proposals to work with Seaford Museum, the results will be made available for public viewing.”

The request from Luke Barber, at the SAS, would mark the centenary of the start of the conflict.
