Tributes have been paid to a town hall security guard who died following heart surgery.

Chris Cooper provided a welcoming face for staff, councillors and visitors to Brighton and Hove City Council's King's House offices, along with Hove and Brighton town halls.

After his sudden death the local authority has opened a book of condolence in Hove Town Hall for people to leave messages for his family.

Penny Thompson, the council's chief executive, said: “I was shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden and untimely death of Chris Cooper.

“In my 15 months as chief executive here he was always welcoming and cheery, and we talked most days.

“Chris was the same with everyone and his cheerful welcome could be counted on.

“I know I am joined by many in wanting to express my sincere condolences to his family and friends.”
