A FORMER St Nicholas Catholic High School student will take to the pool on Saturday to swim for Leukaemia and attempt to break a world record.

Adam Frost, from Knutsford, will join the likes of Rebecca Adlington, Liam Tancock and Mark Foster at Sheffield’s Pond Forge in the 100x100m Swimming Relay Guinness World Record for Swim 4 Leukaemia.

National standard swimmer Adam was keen to be part of the record attempt for what is a meaningful charity for his family.

“My uncle died 10 years ago from leukaemia when he was 19,” said the 18-year-old. “I thought it would be a fitting tribute to do this 10 years on and raise money for Swim 4 Leukaemia.

“I got in contact with Lewis Coleman, who is running the event, and asked him if he needed any swimmers and he asked for my time.

“The race is made up of national swimmers and around 32 will be recognised on the Olympic scale, then Lewis’ little brother who is 10.”

Adam, who trains at Knutsford and Manchester Aquatics Centre, is excited to swim alongside some of the sport’s greats.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he added. “I’m a bit nervous as there will be a lot of great swimmers there so I want to put on a good show!

“It will be nice to be in the same team as people like Mark Foster and James Goddard and speak to them about how they did it in their careers.

“Steve Parry was a star when I trained in Stockport and mentioned a lot around the club, but I guess I fancy myself as a bit of a sprinter like Foster!”

Adam joins the University of Bath in September and, despite missing out on a Commonwealth Games spot this year, is pleased to be using his talent to raise money for Leukaemia.

“My aim this year was to get a time to make the Commonwealth team,” he explained. “But this weekend was the last chance and I didn’t make it – I guess now the long term ambition is the 2016 Olympics.

“The target for the swim is £100,000; people can buy tickets for the event and there’s also coaching lessons from Olympic coaches and swimmers.”
