Three friends watched in horror as an 18-year-old was killed after he was hit by a New Year's Day train.
The Littlehampton man, who has not been identified, was struck and killed by the 7.15pm Brighton to Littlehampton train at 8.30pm as he crossed the line at Paggett's foot crossing near Warren Crescent, between Angmering Station and Roundstone level crossing.
A Network Rail spokesman said: "We cleared the line to allow the emergency services to investigate the scene. Services on the line were stopped for about an hour and resumed at 9.41pm."
British Transport Police confirmed the man was with three friends when he was hit by the train and are not treating the death as suspicious.
A spokeswoman said: "The driver heard a bang but did not see anything. When he checked the train later he saw the remains of a pheasant and thought that was the cause.
"The police were called and the man's body was taken to Worthing mortuary."
