Parents fear their children will be in danger if a set of railings and a pelican crossing are removed from outside a school.

The Windlesham School crossing in Dyke Road will be removed by Brighton and Hove City Council and replaced with a zebra crossing to make way for a new cycle lane.

Concerned mother Kathryn Nott said: “It is so unsafe.

“The kids from the school and nursery will come out and there will be nothing to stop them going into the road.

“They know how to use the pelican crossing.

“I know the Green Party wants to promote cycling but safety must come first.”

Parents have been leafleting and putting up posters to raise awareness about the change.

The proposal was discussed at a meeting of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee on November 26, where councillors supported the plans.

It said there is “currently no support for cycle users”

between the junctions of Highcroft Villas/The Upper Drive and Old Shoreham Road, “particularly for young people who might choose to cycle when considering access to their school in the area”.

Acouncil spokesman added: “We are not aware of any evidence that zebra crossings are less safe than light-controlled crossings.

“Based on our own experience, and with reference to Government guidance which specifically states that ‘zebra crossings offer the greatest advantage to pedestrians as they give them priority over all other traffic’, we are proceeding with the scheme through the relevant stages and will continue to keep the scheme under review.”

Windlesham School declined to comment.

Parents campaigning against the plans will voice their objections at a meeting of Brighton and Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee on March 4.
