It has been confirmed Prime Minister David Cameron has chaired a meeting of the Government's Cobra emergencies committee to discuss the packages, Downing Street said.
It follows the discovery of seven suspicious packages across the UK including one in Brighton.
No details were released of attendees at the Whitehall meeting, but it is thought likely that they included intelligence chiefs as well as Government officials and senior police officers.
