Brighton and Hove has always had a buzzing music scene from indie pop to dance and beyond.

While it is almost impossible to sum up a city in 10 bands or artists, here is a selection that charts the sounds of our seaside home.

Fatboy Slim

Technically not from Brighton and Hove but an adopted son, Fatboy Slim aka Norman Cook will always be remembered for his epic beach gig in 2002 that drew a reported 250,000 spectators. His A-list credentials were affirmed when the video for Weapon of Choice was directed by Spike Jonze and featured Hollywood star Christopher Walken.

Bat for Lashes

Natasha Khan aka Bat For Lashes, came to the fore in 2007 when her album Fur and Gold was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. Going from strength to strength she has most recently collaborated with Damon Albarn of Blur fame.

The Kooks

Naive was the anthem of 2006 as The Kooks exploded onto the scene with their debut album Inside In/Inside Out. With the departure of Max Rafferty and the onerous task of trying to put out a second album that could come close to the success of the first, the band have not quite matched the heights of 2006 but continue to tour.

The Maccabees

Another indie pop success, The Maccabees are set to release album number four this September following on from Colour It In in 2007,  Wall of Arms, released on 4 May 2009 and their most recent album Given to the Wild released on 9 January 2012. Given to the Wild was certified gold and nominated for the 2012 Mercury Music Prize, confirming the band as an indie powerhouse.

Mama Do the Hump was a sensaton and the boys from Brighton haven't looked back. From agitating Huey from Fun lovin Criminals on Never Mind the Buzzcocks to playin Glastonbury, the duo are on the rise and picking up the dance mantle.

British Sea Power

Performing for more than a decade, British Sea Power continue to thrill fans. From performing at a cafe in Saltdean in November 2007 to Berwick Village Hall in May 2011, the band are renowned for live performances in intimate settings.

Phats and Small

The summer of 1999 meant the end of the millenium and the sound of Phats and Small. Turn Around was a huge hit for the dance duo, continuing the rich vein of dance acts coming from the area. Extra kudos is given for the puntastic name of their dbut album Now Phats What I Small Music.

The Go Team

Continuing a theme, The Go Team's debut album Thunder, Lightning, Strike was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize in 2005. Marrying indie and garage rock, the band released three albums before going on a hiatus.

The Electric Soft Parade

Brothers Alex and Thomas White formed this band in 2001. Four albums later and they are one of Brighton's success stories. The brothers have also been at the heart of side project Brakes while Alex is behind another Brighton band The Pippettes.
