A have-a-go-hero was attacked as he went to the aid of a screaming woman who was being dragged along a Brighton street.

The 18-year-old was walking in Bloomsbury Place, Brighton, at 8pm on Sunday when he saw a woman screaming and being dragged by a man.

When the teenager asked the woman if she was ok, the man with her pulled out a knife and slashed him across the hand and forearm.

The victim punched the man to push him away and then ran home and called police.

The man was white, about 20 and slim. He was wearing a blue hooded top and a grey tracksuit or trousers.

The woman was white and slim. She had blonde hair and was wearing a dark hooded top and cut off jeans.

Detective Constable Shirley White said: "This was a nasty attack on a teenager who was trying to do the right thing when he saw a woman in distress.

"I need to speak to anyone who was in the area at about 8pm on Sunday and saw or heard the incident or what happened next.

"If you know anything at all about those who were involved, please contact me."

Knife crime is getting very common in brighton and hove,i often read the police website there is two on there today for the last couple of days. The thing that worries me is official crime figures are down but anyone out and about especially in certain areas knows crime is drastically up.I think the reason official figures says crime is down is because after dark we have very few visable police to record any crime.Local police stations have closed with part time pointless police points in council offices who are also scared of the dark as they are closed so its difficult for the public to report crime. The online police report form gets ignored as I found out last year.We need a visable police force again as we might as well say sussex is open for crime with minimal chance of getting caught.

Very sad and good on this chap for doing the right thing and asking after her safety. I hope the woman is ok and that one day this country stops pandering to thugs.

Had the assailant subsequently jumped into a car and (most importantly) ventured a few feet into a nearby cycle lane then the council may well have been able to provide several high-definition mugshots...

'benefit scum'? You must know the attacker then as there's no mention of what income he receives in the article. You need to study the 'dreams - reality' diagram again Tezzer.

So you're guess is he isn't on benefits and to suggest so is way of mark is it Bozo? Rather than reading the "dreams of reality", how about you rush to A+E
and have your head surgically removed from whatever orifice you have it wedged up, or do you just enjoy the view?
