FORMER York City midfielder Alan Woods proved an ace at golf – after a barren spell of four decades.

The 77-year-old, who made 258 appearances during a six-season career with the Minstermen, bagged his first hole in one in 40 years of playing the game.

Woods notched his long-awaited ace at the par-three 17th hole at Heworth Golf Club, where he has been a member all that time.

Woods, who plays three times a week, was in an event with friends when his nine-iron shot struck gold.

He did not see the ball drop as it had to first clear a bump at the front of the green, but he was delighted, as were his playing companions, to discover he had broken his hole-in-one duck.

Another ace was carded by Ian Snowdon, the chairman of greens at Fulford GC. Playing off a handicap of 14, the former club captain holed in one with a seven-wood at the par-three fifth. He has a previous ace to his credit, at Fulford’s third hole.

• DON TEBB, a former Fulford GC captain, has died aged 88 after a long illness.

Tebb joined Fulford in 1953 and was captain in 1988. He won the club’s annual Fell Cup competition in 1979.

The funeral service will be held at St Hilda’s Church on Monday, at 2.45pm, followed by cremation at York Crematorium.
