A supermarket has raised more than any other store in the county for a diabetes charity.

Tesco has teamed up with Diabetes UK to raise £10million for those suffering from or at risk of diabetes.

Members of staff at the superstore’s Borehamwood branch threw themselves fully into the fundraising challenge, raising £7,500 over the past year– more than any other store in Hertfordshire.

They have taken on challenges and held fundraising events including cake and book sales and raffles.

Around 3.2m people live with type 1 and type 2 diabetes in the UK and around 630,000 more have type 2 diabetes but are undiagnosed.

The £10m has been invested in developing a type 1 diabetes vaccine, supporting newly diagnosed people, helping 70,000 people find out if they are at risk of getting type 2 diabetes, and running a public awareness campaign.

Diabetes UK Eastern regional manager Sharon Roberts said:  “We know that all the Tesco stores in Hertfordshire have been working hard to raise money for Diabetes UK but Borehamwood has pipped them to the post with their incredible amount.

“We are hugely thankful for their fantastic fundraising efforts and to all of those customers who have dipped into their pockets.

“As the partnership continues there will be more activities taking place in Tesco stores across Hertfordshire and we hope local people continue to support our work in supporting all people living with or at risk of diabetes.”
