CD REVIEWS: Paolo Thorsen-Nagel Projekt/And On (Material MRE037) A BELATED welcome for a moving and subtle debut album by this young guitarist and composer. With a core group of Pablo Held on piano, Arne Huber, bass, and Daniel Mudrack, drums, and extra colour from Johannes Ender on saxophones, and Matthieu Michel’s flugel, the music moves in and out from track to track in varying combinations. Pianist Held’s Trio is at the Sage, Gateshead on April 6. materialrecords.com.

Jason Anick/Tipping Point (Magic Fiddle Music MFM-2) IN his second album the virtuoso violinist and mandolin player stretches out from the usual swing programme to include classic jazz tracks by Hank Mobley, Horace Silver and Ornette Coleman, and his own originals. With great support from pianists, Jason Yeager and Matt DeChamplain, and saxophonists, Clay Lyons and Kris Jensen, this is a tremendous CD. jasonanick.com.

Chaos Orchestra/Tipping Point (Chaos Collective CC002) THIS exciting young 20-piece band was founded by trumpeter and composer, Laura Jurd (who’s featured on one track). Its combination of virtuosity, vivacity and variety inevitably invites comparison with Loose Tubes and, indeed, former Tubes’ member Mark Lockheart guests on his own composition Strange Attractions. With talent like this, the future for jazz looks good. chaosorchestra.com.
