Police told how an 85-year-old woman is “blaming herself” after two men preyed on her friendliness to steal £2,000.

At about 3pm on Wednesday the men called at the address in Latimer Road, Eastbourne, and asked if they could leave a message for one of her neighbours.

The 85-year-old let them in and one of the men distracted her while the second searched her home and stole cash.

The first thief was slim and clean shaven with short dark hair. He was wearing a navy jacket and trousers.

The second thief was of medium build He was wearing dark jeans and a yellow or cream T-shirt.

Both were white and aged 35 to 45.

Detective Constable Richard Davidson said: "The victim has been left very upset by what has happened.

"She is wrongly blaming herself for being tricked when it is clear she has been preyed on by these two men because of her friendliness.

"We need to speak to anyone who saw the men in the area or who knows who they are.

"I would also urge anyone else who has been visited by the men to contact us. Please don't feel embarrassed about being targeted but help us find these men before they claim any other victims."
