A phone box was given a gruesome makeover when the pelt of fox was draped across it.

Sussex Police were called after a fox pelt was discovered on the roof of a phonebox in Newhaven High Street at 8.20am today.

Why and how the remains of the fox ended up in its final resting place has left police officers baffled.

A police spokesman said: “The animal was a fox that had been skinned.

“It was just the pelt of a fox but we do not know how or when it was killed.

“It is more than likely to have been knocked down on the road but we do not have any evidence about where this happened.

“There is nothing to suggest the pelt was left as a message to anyone but because it is an unpleasant sight we have arranged for it to be removed.”

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting serial 220 of 7/3 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk.
