Council bosses received 270 complaints about CityClean in just six months – more than ten a week on average.

Between August and January, people contacted Brighton and Hove City Council in their droves to complain about the service.

The majority of the moans – 240 – were about refuse and recycling. Ten were about street cleansing.

The information was revealed following a Freedom of Information request to the council.

The complaints were filed after the strikes in June last year, when rubbish bins overflowed and the streets were littered with waste.

Since then the council claims to have been working to change the bin rounds, but The Argus has been inundated with a steady stream of irate readers who have rubbish piling up on their doorsteps for weeks on end.

On Thursday The Argus reported how readers are still being blighted with missed collections in Seven Dials, Hangleton and Queen’s Park.

New complaints came despite city council claims bin collections were almost back on track after eight refuse vehicles were put out of action with various problems last week.

Six of the vehicles had been repaired by last Friday, with refuse teams promising to work late to catch up on the backlog.

Now, nearly a week on, the council claims the backlog should now be resolved by Monday.

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokeswoman said: “The majority of complaints have arisen due to huge changes made to our refuse and recycling collection services, and we apologise for any disruption.

“The changes will improve the efficiency of the collections, however during the transition there has been significant disruption – particularly during the catch-up period following Christmas and New Year.

“There were also some missed collections due to the breakdown of vehicles.

“Additional agency crews were used where possible to help catch up on missed collections.

“The council’s refuse and recycling teams are working hard to catch up with missed collections and we appreciate how difficult this has been for some residents.

“More information and regular updates can be found on the website at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk.

“Residents can also report missed collections online.”
