A pedestrian who was killed when he was hit by a police car has been named as 46-year-old James Sutton.

Mr Sutton, of Silchester Road, St Leonards died when he was hit by the car on the A259 White Rock in Hastings on Wednesday as it was responding to calls of a car being driven by a suspected disqualified driver.

The IPCC were informed of the incident on Thursday and are currently reviewing what their level of involvement in the investigation will be.

Chief Inspector Natalie Moloney said; "We are co-operating fully with the IPCC and our thoughts are with all those involved and particularly with Mr Sutton's family, to whom we are offering support at this very distressing time for them."

"Anyone who saw what happened is asked to call us on 101 or email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting Operation Marshside."

A postmortem has yet to take place.

A BMW saloon car, which had been reported as being driven by a suspected disqualified driver, was stopped by Surrey Police shortly after 9pm on Wednesday evening at Salfords on the A23, and was seized by that force under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act.

Two men in the car have been reported for consideration of prosecution for driver insurance and licence offences.

Sussex Police are not in a position to release any further information at this time while the IPCC assessment is ongoing.
