Two towns in East Sussex have been named among the best places in the UK to live.

Rye and Lewes will both appear in The Sunday Times’ annual Best Places to Live in Britain supplement tomorrow – the only two towns in Sussex to make the cut.

The guide combines data and statistics such as crime rates, house prices and school performance, and the places selected offer the best quality of life to the widest number of people.

Charlie Dobres, Lewes Football Club marketing manager, who moved to the town from London seven years ago, said the result was “entirely unsurprising”.

He added “There is a general thing about the town that it is just full of doers and people who are happy to get things done and get involved.

“There is also a wonderful mix of people in the town and that is something I don’t think you get when you just come here for a day.”

He also added that the town has a “fantastic football club”.

Fourteen from the South East were featured on the list, featuring towns such as Amersham, Haslemere, Henley-on-Thams, Reigate, Odiham, Windsor and Wokingham.

Councillor Keith Glazier, leader of East Sussex District Council, who is from Rye, said: “I am pleased that the rest of the world has caught up with something I have known all my life. It is the people of Rye who really help to make it so special.”

Part two of the guide will focus on an A-Z of Britain’s cities.

The Times’ home editor, Helen Davies, said: “The Best Places guide is dedicated to celebrating Britain’s abundance of great cities, towns and villages.

“We combine in-depth data with first-hand personal experience to produce an authoritative list.

“There are lots of places across Britain that are worth celebrating, and everyone has different priorities, so this year our supplements cover everything from the countryside to inner-cities.”
