Brighton banjo-maker up for Sony film award

The Argus: Banjo-maker Malcolm McLeod Banjo-maker Malcolm McLeod

A banjo maker and a filmmaker have worked together to produce a short documentary that has been nominated for a Sony award.

Malcolm McLeod, 48, who builds banjos in his workshop in Quebec Street, Brighton, and Jon Rose, 35, flycreative productions, came together to produce The Lurcher which has been nominated in the factual category at the Sony Production awards.

In the film, Malcolm discusses his work while in his workshop – talking about his preference for more traditional sounding banjos and starting to make instruments when he was just 16.

Malcolm said: “We talked about it for a good while and he just wanted to do something different – a lot of the corporate stuff is just set in front of a white wall and I think he wanted to do something more creative.”

“I’ve been messing around with bands since I was about 17, I did the long hair and guitars thing, and then I moved into a career in engineering.”

The film’s title comes from the name of the type of open-backed banjo that Malcolm builds.

Malcolm said in recent years there has been a resurgence in banjo music but that for a long time revealing you liked banjo music earned him some funny looks.

Jon said: “Most of the time we do films that are for schools and corporate events – it was nice to do something where I can experiment with cinematography and different techniques.”

Jon hopes move into doing more pieces like The Lurcher – hoping to produce a film about a London guitar maker and doing a series of shorts based on Brighton’s local characters.
