These are the faces of eight men who have been jailed for a total of more than 35 years after burgling nearly 30 homes across Sussex.

Lee Riley, Lee Ash, Steven White, Guy Harbord and Justin Collins raided 24 homes in Sussex, stealing jewellery and antiques worth an estimated £250,000.

They targeted rural properties in Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, Ardingly, Lindfield, Hassocks, Bolney, East Grinstead, Henfield, Horsham, Upper Beeding, Turners Hill, Walderton, Wisborough Green, Midhurst, Upper Easebourne, Loxwood, Fernhurst, Rogate and Fulking.

Elsewhere in Surrey, Essex, Oxfordshire and Hampshire they targeted an additional 54 properties.

The offences took place between 2011 and 2013.

In each case the burglars struck during the daytime after waiting for the owners to go out, first forcing open doors and windows.

At some of the homes they took keys and stole vehicles off the driveways before fitting them with false number plates so they could be used as getaway cars during other burglaries.

Appearing at Winchester Crown Court, Harbord, 30, of Lordship Lane, Dulwich, London, was jailed for five years and six months, White, 30, of no fixed address, was jailed for five years and six months, Collins, 35, of no fixed address, was jailed for six years, Ash, 31, of High Street, Sutton, was jailed for five years and three months and Riley, 26, of Panmure Road, Sydenham, London, was jailed for four years.

Separately Paul Godfrey 34, of Whitehawk Way, Brighton, appeared at Hove Crown Court and was jailed for four years and four months for burglary.

The court was told Godfrey already had a history of committing burglaries when he broke into a flat in Swanborough Drive, Brighton, on January 21 this year.

He took dozens of gold, silver and diamond rings worth thousands of pounds as well as a handbag containing cash.

Paul Hayward has been jailed for two years and nine months after he admitted two counts of burglary at Lewes Crown Court.

He admitted he walked out of one home he had just burgled in The Drive, Hove, and past a mother and her ten-year-old son at 4pm on October 24.

The 44-year-old, of Edward Street, Brighton, escaped with an iPod, cash cards and a small quantity of money.

A week later, on the afternoon of November 1, he got into a flat in Preston Road, Brighton, and took cash and an iPhone 4.

Oliver Peterson, 22, of no fixed address, was caught by officers running away from a shop that was being broken into in Hastings in the early hours of October 14.

Parked nearby was a Mitsubishi car that had been stolen during a burglary in Vicarage Road in the town in which a TV and wallets were also taken.

He pleaded guilty to burglary and was jailed for two years.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Betts said: “Each of the burglars was convicted because of good work by officers.

“In each case they did their initial inquiries so well that they were quickly able to identify who the offenders were, track them down and charge them.

“The sentences handed down by the courts reflect the impact that burglaries have on victims.

“We are determined to crack down on those who are intent on causing others misery by taking what is not theirs. We want to send a signal to burglars that Sussex is a no go area for them.”
