Medical secretaries protest at outsourcing of Crawley patients' letter typing

WITH VIDEO: Hospital workers have been protesting against the use of a private company to type up patients' letters.

Protesters gathered outside Crawley Hospital yesterday lunchtime to highlight their concerns.

Last year Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust agreed to allow a private company a trial to type up dictated letters instead of its medical secretaries.

At the end of the year it launched a consultation on outsourcing some of the duties carried out by medical secretaries.

Staff fear this could lead to staff either taking a pay cut or losing their jobs.

The demonstration was organised by Unison, which warns outsourcing could have implications on patient safety, confidentiality and confidence.

They say medical secretaries already provide a high quality service and the change would not save money.

It may not come as a surprise, but the Medical Underwriting Insurance Industry started doing this several years ago, offshoring the work, and unsurprisingly the quality went up, turnaround time went down and it was cheaper for the industry.
The NHS needs to look under every rock to save money for frontline services.
Typing letters is a perfect example.

Outsourcing will happen - it is just a fact of life when costs need to be cut and letters need to go out quickly.

The real issue is whether the letters are going to be typed in some call centre in Asia or whether they are outsourced to typists in the UK who have acceptable working practices and will keep the skills (and the money) within our economy- as well as providing part time work for Unison members.
