A 26-year-old man has been convicted of careless driving after police spotted him ‘donuting’ at a busy roundabout.

Martin Hughes of Boundstone Lane, Lancing, pleaded guilty to careless driving at Brighton Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Road policing officers from Sussex Police caught Hughes while they were patrolling in an unmarked car.

They spotted a 3-series BMW stopped at the roundabout at Bolney which connects the A23 with the A272.

As they drove past the BMW accelerated away “revving its engine hard with tyres screeching, and drifting into a hand brake turn manoeuvre around the roundabout several times” before exiting to the A272 where police stopped it.

The car was fitted with a specially adapted hydraulic ram type handbrake.

PC Ian Upperton said; "This irresponsible practice is a hazard to other road users, both because of the risk of collision at the time, and because the road surface can be damaged.

“If you spot anyone driving like this, call police via 101 or report the incident via the Operation Crackdown website www.operationcrackdown.org."

Hughes was fined £220, had five penalty points put on his driving licence, and was ordered to pay £85 costs and £23 Victims Surcharge.

Should that not be "donutting"? Or is it pronounced "donooting"? What is it anyway?

Paltry fine, costs and licence points. He should have been made to have 100 compulsory trips on the i360 in its first week to boost the numbers.

thought donutting was where you locked the front wheels and did a 360 turn ala Sebastian Vetel (not an i360) He was just drifting around the roundabout.
Really dangerous stuff if no one is anywhere near apart from an unmarked Police Car.

...... hence the need for ALL road traffic cops to patrol in unmarked cars.
Ringing 101 is a joke and is for anyone wanting to kill an hour - not for someone wanting to report dangerous driving that is likely to kill somebody.

Surprised to see a picture of an Australian or kiwi police car, still it's better that than a picture of a donut, perhaps no stock donut pics were available for this story.
