A Newhaven school is warning that pupils may be removed from lessons for wearing “Miss Sexy” style trousers.

Tideway School in Southdown Road, Newhaven, has issued a letter to parents and pupils reminding them of the appropriate clothing.

The letter said: “School uniform engenders a sense of belonging and a smart uniform encourages a more mature approach to learning. Parents are expected to give full support to the school uniform policy.

“All students are expected to be in full uniform each day.

“They may be removed from lessons and isolated or sent home if they are not wearing the correct uniform or if their hairstyle or colour is deemed inappropriate.”

Miss Sexy is a brand of trousers which have a buckled front.

The letter reminded parents to check with the school before purchasing items if they are unsure of whether they are suitable.

It added: “The headteacher's decision is final. Trousers must be tailored, not jean or 'Miss Sexy' style.

“Skirts must be one of the school styles, as detailed on the website, and must be an appropriate length. If your daughter has grown since the purchase of her skirt please ensure that a new one is provided for the summer terms.”

A school spokesman told The Argus: “We've not said any specific trousers are banned.

“We said we have a uniform code that specifies types of trousers and skirts our students should wear. We've asked parents to comply with those. We're not saying specific trousers are banned.

“The uniform code says 'these are the ones' and we'd like people to wear them.

“This was done last year with consultation and notification.

“It's about trying to keep expectations. I don't want to comment on names of trousers. Were trying to keep an appropriate business attire in the school. It's about a sense of belonging. It's not names of trousers and about what you ban.

“We haven't got an influx of students wearing any type of trousers or a large change from what is normally accepted.”

Maybe I'm missing something here (because I am no expert in either school uniforms or teenage fashions) but surely banning "miss sexy style" IS a ban on specific trousers? Does the school spokesman require further instruction in the use of the English Language?

I assume the teaching staff set a good example by wearing the appropriate school uniform?

A school uniform ensures conformity and obedience. But then all fashion is a uniform.
