Are Brighton's new Kissing Coppers the real deal?

The Argus: Are new Kissing Coppers the real deal? Are new Kissing Coppers the real deal?

The famous Kissing Coppers have popped up in Brighton again - but are they an authentic Banksy?

No Walls Gallery director James Woodward reckons a new version painted on the old Astoria Theatre might be the real thing.

Woodward says the new artwork has all the hallmarks of an original - despite appearing on April Fools' Day.

He spotted the work on Monday night, a few days after same-sex marriage was legalised in the UK.

He said: “The placement and execution are both right and the timing with same sex marriages legalised in the UK just the other day all point to it being his. It all feels very Banksy like.”

The original Banksy mural fetched $575,000 (£345,000) at a US auction in February after being removed from the wall of a Brighton pub.

The life-size black-and-white graffiti work of two policemen kissing, spray-painted on the side of the Prince Albert pub on Trafalgar Street in 2004, was sold to an anonymous buyer in Miami.

It remains one of the elusive Bristolian artist's best-known works.

“I hope this is the first of a bunch of new pieces in Brighton,” added Woodward. “But I doubt it...”

If its the real deal then that can sell it and use the money for restoration. The building is being left to rot like a lot of listed buildings/structures in the city. Things are left untill its too late for any restoration.

These days Brighton looks like a south American ghetto. What it needs is an army of decent people going around and painting over this illegal graffiti and eyesore.

Maybe a case of sour grapes, could rogerthefish have had a planning application turned down recently ?

You two being so negative won't help Brighton. You should count your self lucky you live in such a VIBRANT location, unless you are both over 60.?

If it is real then it is worth a fortune! 10 year anniversary of The Albert mural, gay marriage, the 'original' has just been sold for £345K in Miami. Also Banksy's website is down for development. The hallmarks are there despite going up the day before April Fools.

I totally agree with Rubberflipper. Nearly all of the so called "art" around on walls and hoardings in our city is dreadful. Nothing but sharp angular shapes sprayed in an aggressive way and images and scowling faces which just look angry and nasty. Words which mean nothing except to the people who painted them. And these artists are proud of them! I've got nothing against street art but why can't these people actually paint something decent, humorous or with a coherent message, go to cities like Brussels and you will find sprayed and painted artwork all over the city that is well done and attractive to the eye. Cartoons, landscapes etc.
I have no doubt that brightens graffiti artists are probably technically very good but their product is now. Yes we are now like a New York ghetto.

At least they can't hack this one out of the brickwork and flog it as it's a listed building! I am baffled how they (whoever they are) created this one as it's much larger than the one that appeared on the wall of the Albert and it's in an incredibly hard place to get to which does sort of say to me that it's a Banksy. Will we ever find out? Either way it's a great bit of art. Brighton has some of the best mural painters and artists in the UK. Just look at that incredible collection of well known faces that was recently commissioned to be painted on the side of the Albert!

if its genuine, why sell it? people would come to see it, and, like the original, it has representation of Brighton within it, taking it out to somewhere else loses its value

A long with the other graffiti art in Brighton, this the city gives its character, i would hate to see Brighton become another modern city, all concrete and the same old shops as everywhere else
