There is severe disruption on the Brighton mainline this afternoon after a person was killed when hit by a train at Hassocks this afternoon.

The incident happened at about 2pm and emergency services are on the scene.

British Transport Police have confirmed a person was killed after being hit by a train but the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Southern Railway are reporting delays of up to 90 minutes on  services via Haywards Heath, Hove and Lewes including services to and from Brighton.

Commuter Felix Elkin, who caught the 15.06 fast train from Victoria, said at 5.25pm he is now somewhere near Lewes. 

All lines are blocked through Hassocks with services being cancelled or diverted at short notice.

Replacement buses are being arranged to run between Brighton and Haywards Heath.

Brighton and Hove buses are accepting are tickets on all routes
