A 34-year-old man has been charged following a firearms incident which brought part of the city centre to a standstill.

Mark Wright, of Lewes Road, Brighton, was arrested at 5.15pm on April 7 in a block of flats at the Vogue Gyratory junction.

He was last charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or violence.

Wright has been remanded in custody and will appear before Brighton magistrates today (April 9) Inspector Adele Tucknott said: "We would like to thank the witnesses who came forward to help the investigation and the public for their co-operation as the area did come to a standstill while we dealt with the incident."

The busy Brighton junction was closed for three hours during the incident.

A huge police cordon shut off Lewes Road, Hollingdean Road, Bear Road, and Upper Lewes Road.

Cylists, motorists and pedestrians were all redirected until the roads were re-opened after 5.30pm.
