A road was closed after a burst water main caused the ground to become unstable.

Sussex Police officers closed Holmes Avenue in Hove at just after 1.30am this morning after a large amount of water began appearing from underground.

Hove firefighters were called to help pump water away while Southern Water engineers back attempting to repair the leak.

At 2.30am engineers turned off a valve to allow repairs to take place which stopped supply to 110 homes.

At 8.20 this morning, half of those homes had their water restored and the remaining 50 had their water back on at 12.40pm.

Fire crews said the amount of water washed away undersoil and sand on the driveways of two homes making the driveways, pavement and roadway all unstable.

The incident comes just days after the A23 at Crawley was closed after a water leak underneath the roadway.

The major route remains closed while Thames Water engineers work on the problem.
