Brighton's beach big screen will be back this summer, showing England’s World Cup matches as well as an assortment of top films.

The 40-square-metre screen will be in place to the east of Palace Pier will be in place from June 12 to July 13.

Along with England’s World Cup campaign in Brazil, Andy Murray’s defence of his Wimbledon crown the British Grand Prix will also be shown.

A number of top films will be on offer including Hollywood blockbuster Hunger Games Catching Fire, The Lego Movie, Steve Coogan’s Alpha Papa and the classic thriller Jaws.

There will also be a selection of films to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, with Steven Spielberg’s War Horse already confirmed.

Councillor Geoffrey Bowden, chairman of Brighton and Hove City Council’s economic development and culture committee, described it as “exciting news” for the city.

He said: “It was fantastic last year and we expect the same this summer.

“The atmosphere is always great and it brings something new and exciting to that part of the city.”

The screen’s main sponsor tequila brand Jose Cuervo will have its own cantina-style bar as well as frozen margarita machines.

Food will be provided by York Place’s Meat Liquor burger restaurant and the award-winning Santa Remedio Mexican street food specialist.

A host of other films are set to be announced in the coming weeks, with organisers still in talks with various studios.

Coun Bowden said the council had handed the organisers three years’ worth of consent to help them attract long-term sponsorship.

He said: “I’m delighted they are back. They had some fantastic movies last year and while I haven’t seen the line-up I’m sure it will be just the same.

“Hopefully we will have some fantastic weather as well – but even if we don’t people still come out.

“Last year people were watching films huddled under umbrellas and jumpers. There is always a great atmosphere down there. I can’t wait.”

While England’s first World Cup group match against Italy cannot be shown due to a late kick-off, their second and third games against Uruguay (June 19) and Costa Rica (June 24) will be aired live.

Due to the anticipated popularity, supporters will have to preregister to get their free tickets.

There will also be a VIP area with seating, high quality audio, usherette service and free popcorn across the month.
