Work to create a shared bus, taxi and cycle lane in a busy city street has begun.
Edward Street in Brighton is set to be transformed by a new scheme that council bosses say will benefit buses, pedestrians and cyclists.
Work has started in the street and the surrounding area to create the shared bus, taxi and cycle lane on its southern side between Upper Rock Gardens and Pavilion Parade. One lane of the dual carriageway is being reallocated from general traffic to buses, bikes and taxis.
On its northern side a new cycle lane will run inside one lane of mixed traffic. Initial works on the central islands also include upgrading street lighting.
Engineers will also work to improve footpaths, including repaving and surface treatments to side roads to improve pedestrian use.
Work will take place over the summer and the scheme is expected to complete by October.
The scheme will cost around £1 million, paid for from a government grant specifically aimed at improving bus services.
