They weren't originally intended to be rude - but this list of Sussex placenames raise many a titter nowadays.

From Dumb Woman's Lane in the east to Titty Hill in the west, we have lovingly compiled our favourite sniggersome monikers - and plotted them in a map too.

There is a phenomena known as 'The Scunthorpe Effect' whereby certain place names are caught out and automatically rejected by spell checkers for this reason. Penistone in Cumbria, Lightwater in Kent, and Twatt in Orkney (or for that matter, Twatt in the Shetlands) are all caught by this.

There is a hamlet in Austria with a VERY rude name which attracts hundreds of British sightseers. I won't say the word, but a few years ago they tried (unsuccessfully) to change the name of the village to Fugging- which should give you a clue. They failed because this name had already been taken by a second village with the same name. And you thought Germans had no sense of humour...

But my favourite has to be Bastardstown in County Wexford Eire. Apparently that was the name of one of the founders of the town and not a comment on the place or its inhabitants.

Bill Bryson mentions quite a few of these in his bookMy favourite is a place in Essex (I think) called Shellow Bowels.

Years ago the BBC's Star Trek board had a big problem with the actor who played Captain Kirk
