Tourists will be given a bright welcome to Brighton and Hove this bank holiday as a much-loved tradition is revived.

A new generation of Promettes are back and hope to revive the famed hospitality of their 1950s predecessors.

But gone are sharp-cut two-piece blue uniforms, white gloves, and smart black handbags. The new recruits will be dressed in bright orange fleeces, blue polo shirts and branded holdalls.

Official marketing body VisitBrighton will launch its City Champions scheme over the Easter weekend, which is certain to revive fond memories for those who remember the Promettes welcoming arrivals to the Sussex seaside during the 1950s.

So far eight new recruits have been signed up from 10 initial applicants, although it is hoped that more volunteers will come forward in the summer to create a team of up to |50.

The newly recruited on-street volunteers will be based at Brighton Station on Good Friday, Saturday, Easter Sunday and bank holiday Monday morning, and will also be found at the Royal Pavilion on Monday afternoon.

The volunteers will have city maps and a new Mini Rough Guide to Brighton and Hove and will offer their help and advice about where to stay, eat and be entertained.

The new distinctive blue and orange uniforms have been designed by social enterprise company Able & Willing who are based in Knoll Business Centre in Hove.

Three new visitor information points will also be ready for the busy Easter weekend with staff at Brighton station’s travel centre, Grosvenor G Casino and the Amsterdam Hotel now trained to deal with visitor’s queries.

Employees at beachfront arts and crafts shop Oh So Swedish will also soon be guiding tourists to where they want to go.

More than 100,000 copies of the guide to Brighton and Hove, produced by VisitBrighton in conjunction with Rough Guides, have been printed and are available from VisitBrighton partner hotels and visitor information including the Brighton Centre box office, The Old Market in Hove and the Thistle Brighton Hotel.

The city council’s economic development and culture committee chair Geoffrey Bowden said: “The City Champions are a great addition to the raft of visitor information on offer and we salute the volunteers who have come forward to share their enthusiasm for the city.

“We hope to recruit more volunteers to join the team as we go forward into the summer season.”
