A charity is celebrating its 20th birthday with a funding appeal to help complete what they claim is one of Brighton and Hove’s most eco-friendly structures.

The Moulsecoomb Forest Garden and Wildlife Project has launched a crowd-funding campaign to help raise the money they need to finish their flagship building.

The charity, which is based in Community Base in Queen’s Road in Brighton, needs £15,000 to complete the building and donors will be offered various gifts to say thank you for their support.

Charity bosses say the building will provide a “much-needed warm and dry space” for staff, pupils and volunteers, help the charity to run its courses and events, and give the ecology project somewhere to store their gardening and cooking equipment.

The outdoor classroom is being built using local and recycled materials including locally-grown sweet chestnut, roof slates made from recycled plastic and the walls will be a mixture of straw-bale and cordwood construction using local wood, clay and straw.

The charity has pupils referred to them who are having problems at school, as well as young adults with learning difficulties and give them the chance to learn practical hands-on skills such as carpentry, construction, woodland management, horticulture, bush-craft and cooking.

Project manager Warren Carter said: “What better way to celebrate our 20th anniversary than completing one of Brighton’s most eco-friendly buildings ever.

“Off-grid and timber framed, it will be our flagship building, making a massive difference to the project and helping us expand our work with school pupils.”
